Bev Vance worked as a nurse but was fired later from the job for her inappropriate behaviour which included stealing drugs from the hospital to fuel her addiction which culminated as a result of growing up in a dysfunctional family.
Beverly Vance once placed a high value on education and integrity. She was even salutatorian of her high school class, but she had to put her Bachelor’s degree on hold because she gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Lindsay, when she was only 19 years old. Then, unlike her siblings, Bev succumbed to the statistical odds of growing up in a dysfunctional family and passed that on to her children.
She would subject J.D. and Lindsay to domestic violence, substance abuse, and instability because she could never maintain a romantic relationship for long. Bev, who followed in her mother’s footsteps and displayed the same hot-headed nature, unfortunately took it a step further when she combined her attitude with her addiction to drugs and alcohol. Instead of caring for her children Lindsay and J.D., she stayed out late to have fun.

The Breaking Point
Following years of emotional and physical abuse inflicted upon him by his mother, J.D. Vance finally reached his breaking point due to an incident which made him realise that he could no longer live with her.
Even after completing rehab in Cincinnati, Beverly Vance relapsed into her previous addiction patterns soon after getting discharged. She once demanded that JD give her a jar of his urine in order for her to pass a drug test. JD was taken aback. He saw how entitled she was, expecting him to simply assist her in passing a drug test, as if it were some basic responsibility he owed her. She was also completely oblivious to the fact that she had broken her promise to stay sober.
This was the final straw for JD. He could never live with her again after what she’d done. He moved in with his grandmother, where he stayed until he graduated from high school.

Bev Vance, who lives in working-class Middletown, Ohio, is doing much better now than she did when her children were younger. Bev turned over a new leaf a few years ago after realising the profound impact her actions had on her children.
