Former Vice President Mike Pence said in an interview on Sunday that following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the United States Capitol, former President Donald Trump was “genuinely remorseful” and inquired about the well-being of his family.
Pence told “Fox News Sunday” host Shannon Bream that he had a conversation with former president Donald Trump five days after the presidential election on Jan. 6, during which the former president “lamented what had happened.”
“I sensed he was deeply remorseful about what had happened,” said the former Vice president, adding that Donald Trump “immediately asked about Karen and Charlotte, who were with me all day and night on January 6th and 7th. He asked me how they were and I responded sternly, ‘They’re fine, Mr. President, they wouldn’t leave.’ And then he said to me, ‘Were you scared?’ And I said, ‘No, I was angry.'”
Mike Pence has been a harsh critic of former president Donald Trump ever since leaving office. While he is being considered as a potential GOP primary challenger in 2024, the former vice president has also been careful to court Trump supporters, some of whom stormed the Capitol on Jan 6 chanting “Hang Mike Pence” for his part in overseeing the 2020 presidential election Electoral College count.
“The President and I clashed in the days leading up to January 6. I’ll always believe that I did my duty that day, by God’s grace, under the Constitution, and upheld the peaceful transfer of power,” Pence said.
According to the House panel investigating Jan. 6, Mike Pence refused to abide by former president Trump’s wishes on Jan 6 saying that he lacked the authority to overturn the results, which Trump had allegedly been pressuring his allies within the administration to do.
The former vice president said he and his lawyers are considering a Justice Department request to speak about Donald Trump and the Jan. 6, 2021 insurgency. “We haven’t reached a resolution,” Pence said on Fox News Sunday.
Pence, who is considering running for president against Donald Trump in 2024, did not elaborate on the Justice Department’s request, saying only that “there has been some contact.”
