A major news outlet reported that former President Donald Trump will not travel to Georgia to campaign for Republican Senate nominee Herschel Walker. According to Republican campaign officials who spoke with The New York Times, the Trump and Walker campaigns decided that an in-person visit from the former president would carry too many political risks.
While former president Trump will not visit Georgia in the final days of the runoff to support Walker, whom he encouraged to run for Senate last year, the former president will still weigh in on the race.
Despite not travelling to make an in-person appearance before the Peach State Senate runoff, in which Walker is seeking to unseat Democrat Warnock, the ex-president will take part in a tele rally for Walker.
Both national and state Republicans believe Trump should simply phone it in for the runoff election.
“I think he’d be more effective if he did it by phone,” Georgia Republican former House Speaker Newt Gingrich remarked, suggesting that former president Trump participate in an automated call to GOP voters on election night.
Donald Trump, who launched his own 2024 campaign on November 15, did not hold a rally for Walker during the general election, instead doing so before the state’s May primary.
Many prominent Republicans, including Georgia’s recently re-elected Governor Brian Kemp, Mike Huckabee, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, have campaigned for Walker in the weeks leading up to the crucial Senate runoff race.
On Election Day earlier this month, the Georgia Senate race went to a runoff, with Walker trailing incumbent Democratic Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock. The time was 4:45 p.m. Over the next few days, with more than 95% of the votes counted, Warnock had received 49.4% of the vote to Walker’s 48.5%.
In Georgia, a candidate must receive more than 50% of the vote to win outright. The runoff election is set for December 6. Depending on the outcome of Senate races in Nevada and Arizona, the Georgia runoff will be crucial in determining which party controls the Senate.
