President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden, and their toddler grandson, Beau, traveled to Nantucket on Thursday with at least half a dozen pumpkin pies to distribute to firefighters during a Thanksgiving Day show of gratitude. Later, Beau Biden walked away with a red fire hat atop his blond curls.
“Oh wow,” President Biden was heard saying this after seeing Beau Biden, who is almost three, emerge from the headquarters building wearing the hat. The president was among the firefighters who had gathered outside the building to greet him.
Jill Biden appeared to try to talk to her grandson about the firefighters, but Beau refused to look up. She was overheard saying she didn’t understand why he was so quiet.
After visiting the firefighters, Biden returned to his Nantucket home, where he is spending the holiday with his family, which includes Beau’s parents, son Hunter and his wife, Melissa, and daughter Ashley.
They are staying at David Rubenstein’s sprawling waterfront compound along Nantucket Harbor, which is owned by the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm. In 2021, Biden hosted Thanksgiving at his home. For more than four decades, Biden and his family have spent Thanksgiving on the Massachusetts island.
Earlier that day, President Biden and his wife, Jill, called the hosts of NBC’s broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York to express their gratitude to firefighters and other emergency personnel.
“I want to say thanks to the firefighters and police officers, first responders. They never take a break,” he said during his call. “And by the way, we’re gonna be talking to some of our troops later today, both here and abroad.”
The call to service members was the only thing on Biden’s agenda for Thursday, but he also stated that he would “spend some time on the island thanking those first responders here.”
It was the Bidens’ second year participating in the annual parade, which this year features 27 giant balloons and 31 floats.
President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden celebrated ‘Friendsgiving’ earlier this week by serving Thanksgiving meals to US troops, Marines, and sailors at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina. As many as 400 service members and their families joined the US President for dinner, where they dined on turkey and ham, as well as sides like mashed potatoes prepared by celebrity chef Robert Irvine.
“The American people have no idea the sacrifices you’re making,” president Joe Biden said to the troops, as he joined them for dinner. “One percent of you represents 99% of the public; you’re all volunteers, you all just show up, and you’re always there,” he said further in his speech.
Jill and I were honored to join the Marines, Sailors, and families of the Second Marine Expeditionary Force last night.
Our nation is indebted to you.
And to all the military spouses and kids who joined us, Jill and I see you. We know how much you also give to our nation. pic.twitter.com/r7FDsGldns

Following the ‘Friendsgiving’ service, a tweet posted to the US President’s official account read, “Jill and I were honored to join the Marines, Sailors, and families of the Second Marine Expeditionary Force last night. Our nation is indebted to you. And to all the military spouses and kids who joined us, Jill and I see you. We know how much you also give to our nation.”
