Guided Access Not Working – Steps to Fix

    What is Guided Access?

Have you ever given your child your iPhone to play a game and they ended up opening your Mail app instead? Or perhaps you were working hard on a project but were delayed due to distracting notifications on your iPad?

There is a simple way to avoid situations like this. It comes in the form of Guided Access for iPhone and iPad. This useful feature restricts what you can see on the screen as well as what you can tap.

Guided Access restricts what you can see and tap on your iOS device’s screen.

The limitation includes only one app. As a result, you can’t view, open, or use any other apps on your device during a Guided Access session.

You can also prevent specific areas of the screen from being tapped using the guided access feature. If the app has banner ads at the top or bottom, this is ideal. It’s also useful for removing the ability to tap notifications set to appear at the top of your screen. Another application for the feature is when teaching someone how to use an app with a lot of buttons to tap—-you can limit them to only the ones they really need.

How to enable and use Guided Access feature on your device

Setting up a Guided Access session on the iPhone and iPad is nearly identical. This is how it works:

    • Open Settings > General > Accessibility on your iOS device.
    • Scroll all the way to the bottom and select Guided Access.
    • To enable Guided Access, move the slider to the right.
    • Select “Passcode Settings” from the drop-down list menu.
    • Tap Set Guided Access Passcode to generate a six-digit passcode. This passcode is required to end a Guided Access session.
    • To double-check your passcode, retype it.

how to set up guided access

Enabling the feature alone does not start your Guided Access session automatically. To enable the feature while using an iOS app, follow the steps below:

    • Start the app where you want to use guided access.
    • To enable Guided Access, triple-click the “Home” button on an iPhone or iPad with a physical home button, or the “Side” button on an iPhone or iPad with Face ID.
    • Make a circle around any parts of the screen you don’t want to see.
    • By tapping Options in the bottom left corner, you can choose whether or not to grant access to the Sleep/Wake button, Volume buttons, touch screen, and motion. To save your selections, click “Done.”
    • Tap the “Start” button at the top of the screen to begin Guided Access.

Anyone attempting to exit a Guided Access-locked app will see a banner message instructing them to triple-click the “Home” button to exit. They will be unable to exit Guided Access unless they know the pre-set passcode.

By triple-clicking your Home (or Side) button and entering your passcode, you can end a guided access session. Remember that if you set a passcode for Guided Access, you must enter it. If you didn’t, you’ll have to enter your device’s passcode.

If you set a time limit in the Guided Access Options section, the session will end when the timer expires. A notification will appear asking you to triple-click your button to enter your passcode.

How to fix guided access not working error

If you find that you are not able to enable the guided access feature on an app, here are a few simple fixes you can try:

    • Restart your iOS device: Anyone attempting to exit the app you’ve locked with Guided Access will be blocked. If your iOS device is running the most recent software and Guided Access is still not working for you, you can try restarting it to resolve the problem.

    • Update your device: Bugs or other issues with Guided Access when it encounters specific apps may also be the cause of the feature’s inability to function on your iOS device. Fortunately, Apple updates its software and all of its components, including Guided Access, on a regular basis. Installing a new update can resolve the issue that is preventing the feature from working properly.
    • Set Accessibility: In some cases, the Guided Access not working error is caused by a misconfiguration in the accessibility-related settings. If the error is caused by misconfiguration, the device will not be locked down in a non-responsive state. Go to Settings, Accessibility, and disable Guided access to optimize the accessibility settings.

    Other simple fixes include:

    • Re-enable guided access from device settings
    • If you have all your device’s data backed up, reset your device
    • Re-enable after opening the app you want to use it on.

If you have tried all the above mentioned methods, and the problem still persists, there’s nothing you can do except ask for technical support from the Apple Care team. They can take a look at your device after you tell them what’s wrong with it and can come up with a fix for it.

    Conclusion

Guided Access is an excellent parental control feature, but it also serves another purpose. If you’re working on an iOS device, it’s a great way to avoid distractions from other apps. However, if the feature does not function properly, it can be quite inconvenient. Trying a few simple fixes, such as the ones mentioned earlier, will help you solve the problem quickly and easily.
