Former president Donald Trump has attributed the Republican Party’s dismal midterm results to the “abortion issue” rather than the shortcomings of his endorsed candidates.
The former president blamed those in the party who pushed for strict abortion restrictions after Roe v. Wade for the poor election results in a post on Truth Social, claiming that it “wasn’t my fault” that the GOP failed to ride the anticipated “red wave” in November’s elections.
On Sunday, the former president began his most recent argument with his own party on his Truth Social platform saying, “It wasn’t my fault that the Republicans didn’t live up to expectations in the midterms.”
“It was the ‘abortion issue’, poorly handled by many Republicans, especially those that firmly insisted on no exceptions, even in the case of rape, incest, or life of the mother, that lost large numbers of voters,” he went on to say.
After the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade in June, the Democrats focused heavily on abortion rights, which some predicted might be a risk given that polls indicated the economy and rising inflation levels were the main concerns for voters ahead of the midterm elections.
Most observers also believe that Trump’s refusal to concede defeat in 2020 and support for his supporters of his election fraud lie were factors in the Republican Party’s disappointments in November, including their failure to gain the Senate, their failure to win a majority in the House, and their losses in crucial races in swing states.
Mitch McConnell, the minority leader in the Senate, withdrew funding from crucial Senate races like those in New Hampshire and Arizona, where Trump endorsed candidates ultimately lost, and Trump blamed his “stupid money” for the GOP’s dismal midterm results.
Former president Trump also criticized those who “pushed so hard, for decades, against abortion, got their wish from the US supreme court and just plain disappeared, not to be seen again,” and he criticized Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate leader, for his “stupid” use of campaign funds.
