Early life and education
McMaster was born and raised in South Carolina. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1969, with a bachelor’s degree in history. In 1973, he graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
Henry McMaster’s Career
Henry McMaster joined the United States Army Reserve in 1973, and served until 1975. After obtaining a degree in law, McMaster served U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond in Washington DC as a legislative assistant till 1974. McMaster practised law for almost three decades, both as a federal prosecutor and in private practice.
McMaster’s political career started in 1981, when he became the United States attorney on 21st May, 1981, upon being recommended by Thurmond. McMaster went on to become the Attorney General of South Carolina until 2010, when he ran for the Governor elections. Even though he finished third, McMaster managed to become the South Carolina Ports Authority through an endorsement deal with a front-runner, Nikki Haley.
McMaster assumed the office of Governor of South Carolina on January 24, 2017, when Haley resigned from the post. He was inaugurated at the age of 69, making him the oldest person ever to be appointed as Governor of South Carolina.
