Dunleavy is from Scranton, Pennsylvania, and graduated in 1979 from Scranton Central High School. He completed a bachelor’s degree in history at Misericordia University in 1983.
Dunleavy earned his master’s degree in education from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. However, He moved to Alaska in 1983 and his first job was at a logging camp in Southeast Alaska. His interest was in teaching.
Later, Dunleavy followed his dream of becoming a teacher. He earned his teacher’s certificate, and then a master of education degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
