The House Select Committee investigating the attack on the Capitol on Jan 6, 2021 plans to release its final report on December 21, according to panel Chairman Bennie Thompson.
Thompson stated that the report’s release will be accompanied by a “formal presentation,” but the specifics are still unknown.
While the committee’s plans have changed in the past, this is the first time the panel has specified a date for the release of its final report.
Chairman Bennie Thompson said earlier this week, while discussing the panel’s work with reporters, that the report is “quite lengthy.”
In addition to the final report, Thompson stated that the committee’s remaining materials will be made public. He stated that the panel will also “provide a method for the public to access it.”
“There’ll be some form of public presentation, we haven’t decided exactly what that’ll be,” the chairman said, according to reports.
Thompson also stated that the committee will vote publicly on criminal referrals on December 21. The announcement came just a day after he told reporters that the panel had reached a “general agreement” to refer some criminal referrals to the Department of Justice.
However, the intended recipient of those referrals is unknown. A spokesperson for the panel said on Tuesday that it “has determined that referrals to outside entities should be considered as a final part of its work,” but that it “will make decisions about specifics in the days ahead.”
California Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff said on Wednesday that facts gathered by the committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack support indicting former President Donald Trump.
Schiff, a committee member, made the remarks in an interview with NPR. The committee will be disbanded at the end of the year and is not likely to be renewed in a Republican-controlled House.
“I think that illustration I gave, that example I gave is just one instance, one particular offense that I think the facts support a potential charge against the former president,” Schiff added.
