The National Rifle Association’s 2022 annual meeting is set to begin on Friday in Houston, bringing together its top brass and several notable conservatives, including former President Donald Trump, for the first time in three years.
This is the 151st meeting of the NRA. The annual meeting will take place over three days, and will include an exhibition spread over 14 acres, that will display all the “latest guns and gear from the most popular companies in the Industry”, and an impressive lineup of the most influential speakers.
The official website for the event reads, “A powerhouse lineup of political speakers. A Saturday night concert like no other. The largest gathering of NRA members and Second Amendment supporters in the country. Highly anticipated fundraising events featuring top brand giveaways. Fabulous breakfasts, luncheons, and dinners. With so many events spread out over four exciting days, there truly is something for everyone to experience.”
The NRA’s annual meeting was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the organization is proceeding with its plans this year, holding the meeting at a time when both gun rights and the organization itself have come under intense scrutiny, particularly after a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, that left 21 people dead, including 19 children.
Guest Speakers for 2022 NRA Annual Meeting
According to the event website, eight people will speak at the meeting, including NRA President Wayne LaPierre and Jason Ouimet, executive director of the group’s lobbying arm. Trump will also make a speech at the event. The former President, who maintained a close relationship with the gun lobby and its activists throughout his presidency, delivered the annual meeting’s fifth speech in a row.
In addition to Trump, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, and Republican Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw are scheduled to speak at the meeting on Friday. Republicans South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson will also speak.
Notably, at least three musicians who were scheduled to perform in a concert at the convention this weekend have cancelled their appearances. Don McLean, Larry Gatlin, and Larry Stewart all cancelled their appearances due to the shooting in Uvalde.
“I just did not believe it was the right thing to do,” Gatlin said in a statement on Thursday. “It would have been kind of a classy move on the NRA’s part, and they need some good PR right now, if they’d cancel the whole thing and said, ‘Hey, we’re going to go in here for one big moment and say a prayer for those folks or have a moment of silence, and we’ll come back and do this later. We can always have our big convention.”
